Internal Family Systems (IFS) in Brampton

The Part of You That Wants to Change, and the Part That Will Not Let You

Most people have felt torn between two conflicting desires.

Part of you wants to leave the relationship, and part of you cannot. You know the drinking is a problem, but part of you still needs it tonight. Part of you wants to rest, but another part sees rest as a moral failure.

People usually describe such behaviour as being conflicted or as self-sabotage. Internal Family Systems takes it more literally and finds it more useful that way.

What Is Internal Family Systems?

IFS is based on the idea that the mind consists of parts, each with its own perspective, concerns, and role, plus a core self that is not a part at all.

This is not a claim about multiple personalities. It is an ordinary feature of how minds work, visible in everyday language. People say part of me wants to do this. I was beside myself. I could not stop myself.

IFS treats those parts as worth listening to rather than overriding.

The central and most distinctive claim is that there are no bad parts. Even the ones causing evident harm are trying to protect you, usually using a strategy that made sense at some earlier point and has long since stopped fitting.

How the Parts Are Understood

IFS describes a few broad roles.

Exiles carry pain, usually from early experience. Shame, fear, loneliness, and the sense of being unwanted. They are pushed out of awareness because their feelings are overwhelming.

Managers work to keep exiles from surfacing. They are the perfectionism, the planning, the self-criticism that keeps you in line, the relentless competence. They are often exhausting, and they are trying to prevent something worse.

Firefighters step in when an exile breaks through anyway. They act fast and without regard for consequences. Drinking, bingeing, rage, shutting down, and compulsive distraction. They are not trying to ruin your life. They are trying to stop unbearable feelings immediately.

Self is what remains when parts step back. IFS holds that it cannot be damaged, only obscured, and that it has the qualities needed to heal the system: calm, curiosity, compassion, and clarity.

Why Fighting a Part Does Not Work

People generally try to defeat the part they dislike. Stop the drinking. Silence the critic. Push through the procrastination.

It rarely works, and IFS offers a clear explanation. A protective part that is attacked protects harder because it sees you as trying to remove the only thing between you and something intolerable.

The alternative is to find out what it is afraid would happen if it stopped. Parts tend to relax when they are understood, and that is when change becomes possible.

How IFS Therapy Supports Mental Health

What Can It Help With?

Depending on your circumstances and the therapist's clinical assessment, IFS may support people experiencing:

  • Anxiety, worry, and persistent overthinking
  • Depression and low mood
  • Chronic stress and burnout
  • Avoidance that has narrowed daily life
  • Harsh self-criticism
  • Grief and loss
  • Chronic pain and long-term health conditions
  • Difficult experiences from the past that continue to intrude
  • Feeling stuck or disconnected from what used to matter
  • Living with a long-term condition or diagnosis

It is often useful for people who have already tried to think their way out of something and found that understanding it did not change it.

ACT is not automatically right for everyone, and a therapist should assess that rather than assume.

What Might a Session Involve?

Sessions are usually slower and more internally focused than conversation-led therapy.

You might be asked to notice where a feeling sits in your body, whether it has an image or quality, and what it is worried about. The therapist facilitates a conversation between you and the patient rather than interpreting it for you.

People often find that a part they had despised for years turns out to be exhausted and frightened and has been doing an unwanted job since childhood without relief.

Is This Approach Right for Me?

It may suit you if you do:

  • Feel divided about something important
  • Have a harsh internal critic
  • Keep repeating a behaviour you genuinely want to stop
  • Have found that understanding a pattern has not shifted it
  • Are interested in your inner life rather than only in symptom management
  • Want an approach that does not require you to fight yourself

It may suit you less if you want structured, short-term work on a defined problem or if the framework of parts does not appeal. It does require some willingness to engage with it on its own terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this mean I have multiple personalities?

No. IFS describes an ordinary feature of how minds work. It is unrelated to dissociative identity disorder.

Am I supposed to talk to parts of myself?

Usually the work is internal, with you reporting what you notice. Nothing is performed.

Is it evidence-based?

IFS has a growing evidence base and is widely practiced. It is newer than CBT, and the research literature is smaller.

Is it religious or spiritual?

The concept of self is sometimes described in language that sounds spiritual, but the approach requires no particular belief.

Can it be done online?

Yes. IFS is largely an inward, conversational process and works well in online sessions.

How long does it take?

It usually takes longer than short-term approaches, especially when early experience is involved.
