Credentials and Professional Standards in CounsellingCoslyn Selby, Registered Social Worker

Credentials & Professional Standards

Clear Qualifications. Professional Accountability. Care You Can Trust.

Choosing a therapist is personal, but it should never require guessing about the qualifications of the person supporting you.

You may come across titles such as Registered Social Worker, Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or Canadian Certified Counsellor and wonder what those designations actually mean.

At C.S. Counselling & Consulting Services, we believe professional trust should be built through clear, accurate and verifiable information.

Our goal is to help you understand who your therapist is, their professional background, the type of support they provide and the standards connected with their role.

Credentials matter.

Training matters.

Experience matters.

And so does feeling comfortable enough to speak openly with the professional supporting you.

Our Commitment to Professional Accountability

Mental health care should not rely on vague statements such as "highly qualified" or "expert therapists" without information to support those claims.

Where applicable, C.S. Counselling aims to clearly identify each clinician's:

  • Professional title
  • Registration or certification
  • Education
  • Relevant professional training
  • Years of experience where verified
  • Areas of practice
  • Populations they support
  • Therapeutic approaches
  • Languages
  • In-person or virtual availability

Professional information published on our website should be accurate, current and verifiable.

We do not want to represent a clinician as having a qualification, specialization or therapeutic competency that has not been confirmed.

Understanding the Professional Designations on Our Team

C.S. Counselling brings together professionals from counselling, psychotherapy and social-work backgrounds.

These professional titles are not interchangeable. Each reflects a different education, regulatory or certification pathway.

Registered Social Worker (RSW)

Registered Social Workers in Ontario are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Social workers may provide counselling and psychotherapy within their professional competence and scope of practice.

C.S. Counselling Founder and CEO Coslyn Selby, RSW, is a psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker and brings more than 20 years of professional counselling experience. Sabrina Abrol, RSW, is also a psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

Registered Psychotherapists are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).

Registered Psychotherapists may provide psychotherapy for emotional, behavioural, relationship and mental-health concerns within their professional training, competence and scope.

Pallavi Joshi is a Registered Psychotherapist on our team.

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) is a specific CRPO registration category.

Professionals using this designation are registered with CRPO under the Qualifying category and practise within the requirements and professional standards that apply to their registration.

Komal Pithava and Sierra Jones are Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) on our team.

C.S. Counselling uses a clinician's exact verified professional designation rather than replacing it with a broader marketing title.

Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)

The Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) designation is a professional certification associated with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA).

Professional certification and statutory regulatory registration are not the same thing.

That is why our therapist profiles clearly identify the actual designation or certification held by each professional.

Parveen Kaur is a Canadian Certified Counsellor on our team.

Professional Credentials and Appropriate Care

Credentials Are Only One Part of Appropriate Care

Not Every Therapist Provides Every Service or Therapy Approach

A professional qualification does not automatically mean that a therapist is trained to provide every form of counselling or psychotherapy.

Different clinicians may have different:

  • Areas of practice
  • Populations they work with
  • Therapeutic approaches
  • Specialized training
  • Professional experience

For example, offering counselling generally does not automatically mean a clinician is trained to provide EMDR, play therapy, specialized trauma therapy or every other therapeutic modality.

The same principle applies when working with particular populations, including children, youth, couples and families.

At C.S. Counselling, services and therapy approaches should be connected to professionals who have the relevant training, competence and professional scope.

Our goal is not to publish the longest possible list of treatments.

It is to help clients access appropriate support from an appropriate professional.

Professional Ethics, Privacy & Confidentiality

Feeling safe enough to speak honestly is an important part of counselling.

Professionals are expected to follow the ethical, privacy and professional requirements associated with their role and governing organization.

This may include responsibilities relating to:

  • Client privacy
  • Confidentiality
  • Professional boundaries
  • Record keeping
  • Informed consent
  • Ethical conduct
  • Working within professional competence

Confidentiality is an important part of the counselling relationship, but it should not be described as "100% confidential."

There are professional and legal circumstances in which information may need to be disclosed.

Your therapist can explain confidentiality and any applicable limits at the beginning of the counselling process.

Continuing Professional Development

Professional learning does not stop when someone receives a degree or professional designation.

Mental-health practice continues to evolve, and clinicians may participate in ongoing learning appropriate to their professional role.

This can include:

  • Continuing education
  • Professional-development courses
  • Specialized training
  • Clinical consultation
  • Supervision where applicable
  • Updates relating to ethical and professional standards

Where additional training is relevant and has been verified, it may be included on the clinician's individual profile.

How Can I Verify a Therapist's Credentials?

We encourage clients to understand the professional background of the person providing their care.

C.S. Counselling therapist profiles are designed to provide information about each professional's credentials, experience, areas of practice and counselling approach. Every registration number is published on the clinician's profile.

Where applicable, registration or certification may also be verified through the relevant professional organization.

Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers

For applicable Registered Social Workers and Registered Social Service Workers.

College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario

For Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying).

Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association

For professionals holding the Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) designation.

Does Professional Designation Affect Insurance Coverage?

It can.

Extended-health insurance plans may specify which types of mental-health professionals are eligible for reimbursement.

For example, one plan may cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker, while another may include Registered Psychotherapists or other eligible professionals.

Before beginning counselling, consider checking:

  • Which professional designations your plan covers
  • Whether a physician's referral is required
  • Your annual counselling or psychotherapy allowance
  • Per-session reimbursement limits
  • Any other conditions attached to your coverage

Insurance coverage depends on your individual benefits plan.

C.S. Counselling cannot guarantee that a particular service or therapist will be reimbursed by your insurer.

Professional Standards With a Human Approach

Credentials help establish education, accountability and professional responsibility.

But counselling is still a relationship between people.

You should be able to understand who is supporting you.

You should feel comfortable asking about their qualifications.

You should know what type of counselling they provide.

And you should have the opportunity to consider whether their professional experience and approach feel appropriate for what you need.

At C.S. Counselling, we want trust to come from real qualifications, transparent information and respectful professional care.

Our broader approach to connecting clients with appropriate therapists, services and therapeutic support is explained through the C.S. Connected Care Approach.
