Counselling for Teens and Young Adults in Brampton

Counselling for Teens and Young Adults in Brampton

A Space That Belongs to You, Not to Your Parents or Your School

Most of the advice aimed at young people is really for the adults around them.

This page is written for both, because both usually end up reading it. The first half is for you if you are the young person reading this page. The second half is for a parent.

C.S. Counselling & Consulting Services works with teenagers and young adults in person at our Brampton clinic and virtually across Ontario.

If You Are the Young Person Reading This

You do not have to be in crisis to talk to someone.

Plenty of people your age come to counselling because things feel heavy rather than catastrophic. School pressure that does not let up. Friendships that shifted and left you outside. Arguments at home that go the same way every time. Feeling flat for months. Constantly comparing your life to other people's and feeling like you're losing. Not being sure who you are supposed to be.

Here are a few things you might be thinking about.

  • It is not your parents' session. The time is yours. What you want to talk about is what gets talked about.

  • You will not be lectured. Nobody will tell you to get off your phone, try harder, or be grateful. If that is what you expect, it is worth one appointment to find out it is not.

  • You do not have to talk about everything. You can say a topic is off limits. That is a normal thing to say to a therapist.

  • You can say it is not working. If you do not click with the person, you can ask to see someone else. Nobody will be offended.

Teenagers Seeking Independent Counselling

Can I Book This Myself Without My Parents?

The answer depends on your age and your situation, and it is worth asking us directly rather than guessing.

In Ontario, the right to consent to your treatment is not set by a fixed birthday. It depends on whether you understand what you are agreeing to and what it involves. That means some young people can consent for themselves, and some cannot.

Practical realities also matter. Sessions have a cost, and for most young people under 18 a parent is involved in paying for them or getting there.

Our honest advice is that counselling generally goes better when at least one supportive adult knows about it. You don’t have to share every detail, but it’s important that at least one supportive adult knows you are going. If you’re worried about how to bring it up at home, we can help you think it through.

If telling a parent feels unsafe rather than just awkward, let us know when you contact us, and we will talk about what options are available. There are also free youth mental health services in Ontario, including Kids Help Phone, that you can reach on your own at any time.

What Will My Parents Be Told?

Your therapist will explain the situation properly at your first session, before you tell them anything significant. It is not left vague.

The general position is that what you discuss is treated as private, and your parents are not given a transcript of your sessions. They may be told in broad terms how things are going, particularly if they are paying or involved in the work.

There are limits, and every therapist has the same ones. If there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else's, or in certain situations the law requires reporting, confidentiality cannot be absolute. Your therapist will explain the limits at the start, so you know what to expect later.

If you are 18 or over, the position is simpler. It is your counselling, and nobody will be told anything without your permission.

Ask about all of this in your first session. It is a completely reasonable question, and a good therapist will be glad you asked.

If You Are the Parent Reading This

A few things worth knowing.

  • Your teenager may refuse at first. This is common and often reflects a desire not to be seen as a problem that needs fixing. Giving them some control over the decision helps more than insisting.

  • You may be involved, and you may not be. With younger teenagers, parent sessions are often part of the work. Older teenagers and young adults usually have sessions that are theirs alone. Your therapist will explain what suits you.

  • You will not be told everything. This choice is deliberate. A teenager who believes their sessions are being reported home will not use them. You will be kept informed about progress and about anything affecting their safety.

  • You are not being blamed. Parents often expect to be. It is not how the system works.

  • Sometimes the most useful thing is your session. Parenting a teenager who is struggling is genuinely challenging, and support for you is a legitimate option in its own right.

Young Adults and the Years After School

Counselling for Young Adults After School

Counselling here does not stop at eighteen.

The years between school and settled adulthood are genuinely difficult, yet they are treated as the easiest. University or college. Moving out, or not being able to afford to. First jobs that are not what you hoped for. Friendship groups scattering. Deciding how much of your parents' plan for you is actually yours.

Many young adults also feel a specific pressure in families that sacrificed a great deal to bring them here. Changing direction can feel like letting people down rather than a normal thing to do at twenty-two.

If you are at this stage, counselling is entirely yours. No parental involvement is required at all.

Listen. Understand. Support.

Listen.

Properly, without rushing to advice.

Understand.

School, friendships, family, culture, identity, and everything happening online are all part of a young person's life.

Support.

We work toward practical strategies that fit an actual teenage life rather than an idealized one.

Depending on the clinician, counselling may draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, mindfulness-informed strategies, and psychotherapy.

Meet the Therapists Who Work With Young People

Working with teenagers is a particular skill. It requires being straightforward without being preachy and patient with someone who may not say much for the first few sessions.

Not every clinician does this work. When you get in touch, we will discuss age, what has been happening, and who may suit.

Why Young People and Families Choose C.S. Counselling

We have supported clients in Brampton and across Ontario since 2011. The practice is led by Coslyn Selby, RSW, a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist with over 20 years of professional counselling experience.

Appointments are available in person and online, and some after-school, evening, and Saturday times are available, because counselling that requires missing class is more difficult for everyone involved.

Culture, Identity, and Growing Up in Brampton

Many young people here spend the day in one set of expectations and the evening in another.

What is normal among friends at school may not be acceptable at home, and the reverse is also true. Family hopes about careers, relationships, and behaviour may not match what a young person wants for themselves. Second-generation young people often find themselves explaining each side to the other.

None of this makes anyone wrong. It is simply what growing up between cultures involves, and it is worth talking about.

Multilingual counselling may be available in languages including Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu, depending on therapist availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do you work with?

Teenagers and young adults. For younger children, see our children's counselling page. Tell us the age when you get in touch, and we will advise.

Do my parents have to know?

Your therapist will explain confidentiality clearly at your first session. In most cases, counselling works better when a supportive adult knows you are attending, and we can help you figure out how to bring it up.

Can I book my appointment?

It depends on your age and circumstances. Contact us and ask directly rather than assuming the answer is no.

What if I do not want to talk?

That is a normal way to start. Nobody will force a conversation, and sessions can move at your pace.

Will I be diagnosed with something?

Counselling is not the same as a diagnostic assessment. If something further would help, your therapist will discuss it with you.

What if I do not like my therapist?

Say so, and we will look at other options. It is not rude.

Can I have sessions online instead?

Yes, for appropriate clients across Ontario.

Is there free support if I cannot afford counselling?

Yes. Kids Help Phone is free, confidential, and available across Canada by phone or text at any hour, and there are other no-cost youth services in Ontario. Ask us and we will point you toward them.

You do not need to have a good enough reason. You do not need to know how to explain it. You do not need to have tried everything else first.

Tell us what has been going on.

We'll start by listening.
