Its founding claim is that people have a natural drive toward growth, and that this drive gets obstructed rather than lost. It gets obstructed by conditions: by having learned that acceptance depends on performing, achieving, staying quiet, being useful, or not being difficult.
Person-Centred Therapy in Brampton
You Set the Direction. The Therapist Does Not Have a Plan for You.
People often expect counselling to involve being told something.
That the therapist will listen for a while, identify what is wrong, and then explain it and issue instructions. Some approaches work a little like that. Person-centred therapy works on the opposite assumption.
It holds that people already contain what they need to work things out and that the conditions required for that to happen are relational rather than technical.

Person-centred therapy, sometimes called client-centred therapy, is one of the most established approaches in the field and underpins a great deal of modern counselling practice.
Most people have absorbed a version of this. Somewhere along the way it became clear that being fully yourself was not entirely safe, so you adapted. The adaptation helped. It also tends to leave people slightly estranged from their own responses and unsure of what they actually think.
The therapy provides a relationship without those conditions attached, which is rarer than it sounds and does more than people expect.
The Three Conditions
The approach rests on three qualities the therapist offers.
Unconditional positive regard. Acceptance that does not depend on what you say. Not approval of everything, nor agreement. Acceptance of you as a person, regardless of the material.
Empathy. A genuine attempt to understand your experience from inside it and to check that understanding rather than assume it. Not sympathy, which is felt from outside.
Congruence. The therapist is a real person rather than a professional performance. This is less obvious and matters considerably. People can detect a mask, and it makes honesty harder.
The claim is that these conditions, sustained over time, are what allow someone to say what is actually true and then work out what to do about it.
What Can It Help With?
Depending on your circumstances and the therapist's clinical assessment, person-centred work may support people experiencing:
- Anxiety, worry, and persistent overthinking
- Depression and low mood
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Avoidance that has narrowed daily life
- Harsh self-criticism
- Grief and loss
- Chronic pain and long-term health conditions
- Difficult experiences from the past that continue to intrude
- Feeling stuck or disconnected from what used to matter
- Living with a long-term condition or diagnosis
It is often useful for people who have already tried to think their way out of something and found that understanding it did not change it.
ACT is not automatically right for everyone, and a therapist should assess that rather than assume.
What Might a Session Involve?
Fewer techniques and more conversation than most approaches.
You lead. The therapist will not arrive with an agenda, will not usually set homework, and will not tell you what your difficulty means. What they will do is listen closely, reflect back what they are hearing, and check whether they have understood.
That sounds simple. Being properly listened to, by someone with no stake in the answer and no opinion they are steering you toward, is a genuinely unusual experience, and people often find things become clear in the saying of them.
Sessions can feel unstructured at first, particularly for people who expected a program. Most settle into it.
Is This Right for Me?
It may suit you if you:
- Want space to work something out rather than be given a method
- Have spent a long time accommodating other people
- Are unsure what you actually want, underneath everyone's expectations
- Are wary of being labelled or diagnosed
- Have never had counselling and want to start somewhere gentle
- Value being understood more than being advised
It may suit you less if you want structured tools for a specific symptom or clear goals and measurable progress. Approaches like CBT or solution-focused work serve that better, and many of our therapists combine them.
Person-Centred Work at C.S. Counselling
This approach is the foundation a good deal of our practice sits on, and three clinicians name it among the methods they use.
Sabrina Abrol, RSW, includes client-centred work among her documented approaches, alongside CBT, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness. She offers sessions in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu.
Parveen Kaur, a Canadian certified counsellor, uses client-centred counselling and supportive psychotherapy and works with adults, adolescents, and older adults.
Komal Pithava, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), includes client-centred and person-centred therapy among the approaches she is trained in, alongside ACT, trauma-informed practice, and compassion-focused work. She offers sessions in English, Hindi, and Gujarati.
Sierra Jones, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), includes person-centred therapy among the modalities she draws on and describes her overall approach as integrative and client-centred.
These interventions should only be provided within a clinician's professional training, competence, and scope.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the therapist just nod and repeat things back?
Caricatures of this approach suggest so. In practice it involves active, careful listening and genuine engagement, not passive reflection.
Will I get any advice?
Not usually in the form of instructions. The approach trusts you to reach your own conclusions, which tend to hold better than borrowed ones.
Is it evidence-based?
Yes. It is one of the most researched approaches in counselling, and the relational conditions it describes are associated with good outcomes across many kinds of therapy.
Is it only for mild difficulties?
No. It is used across a wide range of concerns, though some situations call for a more structured approach alongside it.
Can it be combined with other approaches?
Very commonly. Most of our therapists use person-centred principles as a foundation and draw on other methods as needed.
Can I have sessions in a language other than English?
Yes, depending on the clinician. Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, and Gujarati may be available.
How long does it take?
There is no set length. It is reviewed as you go.
