The C.S. Connected Care Approach

The C.S. Connected Care Approach

Because Mental Health Is Connected to More Than One Part of Your Life

A person may come to counselling because of anxiety, conflict at home, low mood, anger, relationship difficulties or simply because life no longer feels manageable.

But what brings someone to counselling is not always the whole story.

Stress at work may affect patience at home. Relationship difficulties may influence confidence. Immigration or cultural expectations may shape family relationships. Anxiety may lead to avoidance, which can then create additional problems in everyday life.

At C.S. Counselling & Consulting Services, we believe meaningful support begins by understanding these connections.

That idea is at the heart of the C.S. Connected Care Approach, our way of bringing together the person, their experiences, therapist fit, counselling needs and appropriate therapeutic support.

It starts with one question:

What has been happening in your life?

From there, we listen, understand and explore what support may be appropriate.

What Is the C.S. Connected Care Approach?

The C.S. Connected Care Approach is our client-centred philosophy for understanding and organizing counselling support.

It is not a new therapy technique or a one-size-fits-all treatment model.

Instead, it helps us look beyond a single concern and consider the different parts of a person's experience that may be connected.

These may include:

  • Emotional well-being
  • Relationships
  • Family dynamics
  • Culture and language
  • Immigration or settlement experiences
  • Work and responsibilities
  • Important life transitions
  • Past experiences
  • Current coping strategies
  • Personal strengths
  • Goals for counselling

Not every area will be relevant to every client.

You decide which parts of your story matter.

Our role is to listen carefully enough to understand the bigger picture before exploring what kind of support may fit.

01

1. Understanding You Comes First

We Begin With the Person, Not the Therapy Technique

Many people reach out for counselling without knowing what type of therapy they need.

You may have heard of CBT, psychotherapy, mindfulness or other approaches but have no idea which one applies to what you are experiencing.

That is okay.

At C.S. Counselling, you do not need to choose a therapeutic method before someone has heard your story.

We begin by understanding:

  • What feels difficult right now?
  • How is it affecting your everyday life?
  • What would you like to be different?

Only then does it make sense to explore the next step.

02

2. Seeing the Connections Around the Concern

One Concern Can Affect Many Parts of Life

Mental health does not always fit neatly into separate categories.

For example:

Someone experiencing anxiety may also be having difficulty sleeping, concentrating at work or communicating with their partner.

A teenager struggling emotionally may withdraw from family members, which can create worry and conflict at home.

Someone adjusting to life in Canada may experience changes in identity, family roles, relationships and social connection at the same time.

The C.S. Connected Care Approach encourages us to ask:

What else may be connected to what this person is experiencing?

Not to make assumptions, but to understand context.

03

3. Finding the Right Therapist Fit

The Right Service Is Only Part of the Decision

Two therapists may offer similar services and still have very different professional backgrounds, approaches and communication styles.

Therapist fit can involve factors such as:

  • The concern you want help with
  • The therapist's professional experience
  • Populations they work with
  • Therapeutic approaches they use
  • Language preferences
  • Cultural understanding
  • In-person or virtual availability
  • How comfortable you feel speaking with them

C.S. Counselling brings together professionals from different counselling, psychotherapy and social-work backgrounds.

Where possible, we help clients explore which therapist may align with what they are looking for rather than treating therapist selection as an afterthought.

4. Connecting You With Appropriate Counselling Support

Once we better understand what is happening, the next question becomes:

What kind of support makes sense?

Depending on your needs, counselling may involve support for:

  • Individuals
  • Couples
  • Families
  • Children
  • Youth
  • Mental health concerns
  • Relationships
  • Family conflict
  • Anxiety or low mood
  • Anger
  • Alcohol-related concerns
  • Self-esteem
  • Life transitions
  • Other appropriate areas of practice

The goal is not to place someone into a service category as quickly as possible.

It is to understand why that service may be appropriate for them.

5. Choosing a Therapeutic Approach That Fits the Person

Therapeutic modalities are tools.

The person comes first.

Depending on the client's needs and the professional training of their therapist, counselling may incorporate approaches such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Solution-Focused Therapy
  • Mindfulness-informed strategies
  • Client-centred approaches
  • Psychotherapy
  • Other appropriate therapeutic modalities

No therapy approach should be presented as automatically right for everyone.

The clinician considers what may be appropriate within their professional training, competence and scope of practice.

6. Making Support More Accessible

Appropriate care also has to work within real life.

C.S. Counselling provides in-person counselling at our Brampton practice, while virtual counselling is available for appropriate clients across Ontario.

We may also consider factors such as:

  • Location
  • Work schedules
  • Family responsibilities
  • Transportation
  • Therapist availability
  • Language preferences
  • Preference for in-person or virtual sessions

Because sometimes the best counselling option is not only the one that is clinically appropriate, it also needs to be realistically accessible.

Culture, language and life experience in counselling

Culture, Language and Life Experience Are Part of the Conversation

When They Matter to You

Sometimes the easiest language for everyday conversation is not the easiest language for talking about emotions.

Culture, immigration, family expectations, community experiences and language may influence the way someone understands or talks about mental health.

But culturally responsive counselling should never mean making assumptions about someone because of their background.

Within the C.S. Connected Care Approach, these factors are explored only when they are relevant to the client.

Multilingual counselling may be available in English, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Gujarati, depending on therapist availability.

Listen. Understand. Connect. Support.

The C.S. Connected Care Approach brings our philosophy together in four steps:

01

Listen

Hear what the person has been experiencing without assuming we already understand.

02

Understand

Explore the connections between their concerns, relationships, experiences, circumstances, strengths and goals.

03

Connect

Consider therapist fit, counselling needs and an appropriate therapeutic approach.

04

Support

Work collaboratively toward meaningful goals while adjusting the counselling process as needs evolve.

Coslyn Selby, founder of C.S. Counselling

Why We Created the C.S. Connected Care Approach

C.S. Counselling has supported clients since 2011 and is led by Coslyn Selby, RSW, psychotherapist and Registered Social Worker, who brings more than 20 years of professional counselling experience.

Over years of working with people experiencing different emotional, relationship and life concerns, one principle remains important:

People are more than the reason they first walked through the door.

Someone may arrive because of anxiety.

But understanding them may also mean understanding their relationships, responsibilities, experiences, strengths and what they hope will change.

The C.S. Connected Care Approach gives that belief a clear place within everything we do.

Start With a Conversation

You do not need to know which therapist you need.

You do not need to choose a therapy technique.

And you do not need to explain everything perfectly.

Start by telling us what has been happening.

We can begin there.
